This is from our weekend working for Habitat for Humanity Romania. We went with about 30 volunteers and two staff members. We started out the weekend Friday night at a four star hotel in Pitesti. Along with the 250 lei they gave us food and board was covered so basically as "volunteers" we each had about 100 lei leftover . Everyone except for me who lost a 100 lei at a restaurant, left with more money than we anticipated having. Thanks PC for paying us to volunteer. We started working on Saturday digging a trench all around the house, which was to house 16 small families. It was so hot until it rained in the afternoon to cool everyone off. I spent the last 3/4 of the day with a stomach ache after working in the heat and taking antibiotics for 2 ear infections. Yuck!! The child in the window spent the whole weekend watching us, thinking God knows what. I also got to watch a dog give birth to her puppies. Everyone was quite disgusted except for me. It was really sad since her bed was in the Habitat house in a dirt pit.
Habitat Romania started in 1996 and now operates in 7 cities and surrounding villages. They had their 100th house finished in 2003. We were told that the apartment we were working on would not be done for over a year and maybe two. In Pitesti, Habitat started in 2001 and they have renovated 30 apartments.
