The picture of the house is how they build here. The romanians think their buildings are more sound here but I am not so sure about that. They also use tree logs to hold up the second floors during construction. After this point they just use another form of plaster to fill in the cracks. The houses like to crumble. Stance (from Macedonia) is on a bridge made from radiators!! The pictures of the bathroom objects are our nice accommodations. Let me just say it was beyond DISGUSTING!!!
The flag picture is me playing in the Mayor's office while he stepped out. He never knew what we were doing but when he came back the three of us girls in there had spilled the bowl of sugar they gave us for our coffees onto the table and floor. When they came back in they were looking at the ashtray full of dirty suger but didn't notice it on the floor and in the cracks of the table. It was so funny. They probably thought we were just some weird foreigners (USA, Germany, and Macedonia).
This is Turceni where my organization Youngsters without Borders went a few weeks ago for a Leadership Training. Ashley, the other PC Volunteer that I work with and Dave, volunteer from her PC group 20 did the training and it was surprisingling useful. The village is home to one of the largest thermal coal power plants in Europe and covers 30% of the energy. I actually do have some pretty (if thats what you would call them) photos of the plant but I still have to upload them.
We stayed 3 nights in a highschool dormitory. Let me just say that it was worse than camping!! I can't believe they actually make students live there. The bathroom pictures you see are what they actually looked like. Noone even braved to take a shower and there was only cold water (if you could find water at all). Some of the sinks didn't have water or they leaked all the time with no drain pipes under them. The water just flowed onto the floore and barely found the drains. There was rust all over!! There were 8 cots in each room, which was pretty fun. I was so glad that I brought my own blankets because there was hair and stains all over the beds. Everyone teased me at first for bring suck a big bag but they took it back when we got there. Hahaha. The area was also covered in moskitos (if any of you know I get major alergies to bugs especially moskitos). I once again (like many times in foreign countries) woke up with chicken pox looking bumps all over my body and that is after bug spray!! You would'nt believe the amount of money I spend on bug repellants, anti-itch creams and Raid supplies.
The only good part of the trip was the fun we all had together. We had the facilitators, volunteers and journalists there from the EuroHouse Networks. This is a project that I am running through the organization. It is made up of 10 villages in Gorj County where there are sometime of youth centers in the villages.
