Sibiu

Sibiu is where we had our Peace Corps Inservice Training in December. The city was amazing and was also voted a European Capital of Culture for 2007. Sibiu has one of the largest and best preserved Old Towns in Transylvania, Romania. There is a large German-speaking Saxon community, which really excited me!! The town also has another name Harmannstadt, which is still widely used.
This is the Roman Catholic Cathedral (Biserica Romano Catolică), built between 1726 and 1733.

This is Hotel Continental where we got to stay.
This is the former Council Tower (Turnul Sfatului) from 1588 and it links the smaller Piaţa (center) to the larger one. This building was used as a cereal warehouse.
These are views from the Cathedral

Rooftops like this one are called Eye's of Sibiu.
Iron Bridge or also called Liar's Bridge from 1859. The nickname comes after tricky merchants who traded here and by young lovers who come here to confess their undying love. If anyone tells a lie while standing on the bridge it is meant to collapse. It is said that Ceauşescu once crossed the bridge and it didn't collapse.

Cobblestone streets everywhere!!! All the volunteers had a Christmas party and some of us brought cheap gifts. I brought a cobblestone that I found on the street. It was just supposed to be a joke but the guy that got it was very excited. He might even still have it!!

Isn't this funny?? CIA Sibiu. No idea what it actually was.
