Prague: Vysehrad "Castle on the Heights"

While in Prague with 2 friends, we decided to escape the horrible crowds of tourists and go to Vysehrad. It was a beautiful place with extensive gardens and a perfect view of the Vlatava River. In the 11th century, the king chose Vysehrad as the site for his palace along with the Church of Saints Peter and Paul and the city's oldest Romanesque structure, St. Martin Rotunda.

Vysehrad Cemetery is significant to Czechs because it contains the graves of well-known country people like Mucha and Smetana. (Later in the week we went to an exhibit of Mucha who is a famous artist)

In the 1870's the cemetery was chosen as the site for the national cemetery.

Church of Saints Peter and Paul

The church was redesigned with a Gothic theme after the rise of Prague Castle in another part of the city. Smetana (buried in the cemetery) once set his opera Libuse here.

Maybe they wish they were in Jamaica. This was parked inside the gates of Vysehrad!!
The Gates of Vysehrad are famous: This is The Leopold Gate.
